TEASER
ABOUT THE FILM
Rock climber Mike Largent sets out to conquer the United States’ hardest offwidth routes, a masochistic journey that calls for a deeper examination of his relationship with addiction. A notoriously demanding and daring subgenre of climbing, vertical offwidth mirrors the internal battles Mike is up against.
Filmed across Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and California, this documentary is currently in production with a festival and distribution run targeted for 2027-28.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
As a climber I’ve witnessed firsthand how this sport can be a catalyst for positive change. For me, climbing represents mental regeneration through exercise, community and as a safe haven from a world that constantly seeks to commodify our struggles.
Through the lens of Mike Largent, this film explores the extremes of this regenerative quality by connecting addiction and rock climbing, which he used as a tool to gain and sustain sobriety.
Mike is a passionate, playful and at times stoic, semi-professional climber in recovery. His story, and deep connection to the sport, reflects a more human and relatable vision of climbing. One that reveals its spiritual and profound role in our lives.
This film, and the climbing itself, is not only about grand athletic objectives. It’s about continuing upward, even when progress is slow, painful, and unexpected.

PROOF OF CONCEPT
Paisano Overhang is our proof of concept, an award-winning short film focused on Mike’s most recent attempt at the California climb Paisano Overhang. Highlighting the connection between climbing, acting and ego, this is an initial exploration of our subject and our visual approach.
This short was selected to screen at the prestigious Oscar-qualifying AmDocs Film Festival. It was also awarded Best Short Documentary and Best Cinematography at the Film Invasion LA festival.
THE CAST
MIKE LARGENT
Main Subject
A Durango, CO native, Mike is an athlete, climbing instructor, and founder of Theater of the Wild, a climbing-centered, truck-bed theater company he built and performs in. A climbing thespian!
Determined and community-driven, Mike approaches each obstacle with grit, whether it's the hardest offwidth routes in the country, setbacks in his acting career, or his brother's own struggles with sobriety. No matter what, he meets it all with lightness and humor, and keeps moving forward.
JOHN LONG
The Mentor
A climbing legend and founding member of the Stonemasters, the iconic 1970s Yosemite collective that rewrote the limits of the sport, John Long is the first ascensionist of Paisano Overhang, one of Mike's key projects.
He has spoken publicly about his own struggles with alcoholism, making him a natural presence in a film about what climbing can carry us through. An author and Emmy-nominated filmmaker, John bridges the worlds of climbing and storytelling that sit at the heart of OFFWIDTH.
GISELY “GI” FERRAZ
The Coach
A Brazilian professional climber and La Sportiva athlete, Gi is Mike's coach and climbing partner on some of his hardest routes.
After losing her partner in a tragic climbing accident, she found her way back through the sport, making her one of the most honest voices in the film.
JIMMY LARGENT
The Brother
Mike's brother, whose own struggles with sobriety run parallel to Mike's journey. His story surfaces the deeper questions in the film that the climb alone can't answer.
SUZIE LARGENT
The Partner
Mike's wife and steady ground beneath everything he does. As his life partner, her presence anchors Mike’s journey in his day-to-day reality outside of the sport.
